Trauma Consultant for Film, Television & Creative Projects
Clinical insight for stories about trauma, migration, mental health and political violence.
I'm Maheen Hyder (MSW, RSW), a trauma therapist, clinical supervisor, writer and refugee mental health specialist with more than a decade of experience across clinical, humanitarian, research and community mental-health settings in Canada and internationally.
I provide trauma and mental-health consultation for filmmakers, writers, producers, directors, journalists and other creative teams who want to portray psychologically complex experiences with greater accuracy, depth and care.
My role is not to make a story clinically perfect or strip it of ambiguity.
It is to help creative teams ask better questions about what a character has lived through, how those experiences might shape their inner and relational world, and what feels psychologically believable on the page and screen.
What I Can Consult On
Trauma & PTSD
How trauma may affect memory, emotion, relationships, behaviour, sleep, trust, intimacy, bodily responses and a person's sense of safety — without reducing a character to a diagnosis.
Complex & Relational Trauma
Character development involving childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, coercive relationships, family systems, attachment, dissociation, hypervigilance, people-pleasing, shutdown and other adaptations to prolonged adversity.
Refugee Mental Health & Forced Migration
Stories involving refugees and refugee claimants, asylum and displacement, migration and borders, family separation, detention, persecution, torture, political violence, prolonged legal uncertainty, resettlement and belonging, interpreters and cross-cultural clinical care.
My background includes extensive clinical and humanitarian work with people affected by these experiences, as well as knowledge of the intersection between mental health and refugee protection processes.
Mental Health & Therapy Scenes
Consultation on the realism of psychotherapy scenes, psychiatric assessment, suicide and safety assessment, crisis intervention, therapist-client dynamics, clinical documentation, boundaries and ethics, hospitalization and psychiatric emergency settings, how clinicians actually speak, think and respond in difficult moments.
Grief, Loss & Ambiguous Loss
Stories involving bereavement, disappearance, estrangement, migration, family separation, displacement, complicated relationships to the person who was lost, or grief for places and futures that no longer exist.
Sexual & Gender-Based Violence
Consultation on the psychological and relational consequences of sexual violence, coercion, intimate-partner violence and gender-based violence, with particular attention to avoiding sensationalism or reducing survivors to what happened to them.
Culture, Identity & Belonging
How race, culture, faith, migration, sexuality, gender, family, class and political history may shape a character's emotional world without turning identity into exposition or stereotype.
War, Torture & Political Violence
Consultation for narratives involving armed conflict, detention, torture, persecution, state violence, and the psychological consequences of living through environments where danger is political as well as interpersonal.
From Clinical Accuracy to Character Depth
Sometimes a creative team comes to me with a very specific question:
Would someone with this history respond this way?
Other times the question is larger:
What might this character carry that we haven't written yet?
I can help think through:
- character histories and psychological formulation
- trauma responses and behavioural consistency
- emotional and relational arcs
- what may be happening beneath dialogue
- how trauma might show up somatically
- what a character avoids, remembers or cannot yet articulate
- family and cultural dynamics
- therapist or psychiatric scenes
- refugee and immigration contexts
- ethical or representational concerns
- language that inadvertently reproduces stigma
- places where a script becomes psychologically implausible
- places where a portrayal may be technically accurate but emotionally thin
The objective is not to turn a script into a clinical case study.
It is to help the psychology serve the story.
Beyond the Trauma Trope
Trauma is often represented through a small vocabulary: flashbacks, breakdowns, nightmares, violence, silence.
Real psychological life is usually more complicated.
Trauma can also appear as humour, perfectionism, caretaking, hyper-independence, anger, ambition, numbness, control, tenderness, contradiction, or an extraordinary capacity to function while carrying something privately.
I am especially interested in helping creative teams move beyond the idea that a traumatized character must either be visibly broken or inspirationally "resilient."
People remain contradictory, funny, desirous, difficult, political and fully alive after terrible things happen to them.
That complexity is usually where the more interesting story begins.
Trauma in Political Context
My approach is explicitly attentive to power and context.
A story about displacement is also a story about borders.
A story about torture may involve states and institutions.
A story about migration may include race, language, class, citizenship and belonging.
A story about psychological distress may also involve unequal access to safety and care.
I can help creative teams think about these conditions without allowing politics to flatten characters into symbols.
The inner world still matters.
The aim is to hold psychology and political reality at the same time.

A Note on the Work
Creative consultation is educational and advisory.
It is not psychotherapy, clinical assessment or treatment for writers, actors, cast or crew.
The purpose is to bring clinical and contextual knowledge into the creative process while respecting the needs of the story and the expertise of the people making it.
